Does anybody know some good sites for sound FX? It seems to me that some funky sounds could really be the icing on the cake for a theme. I mean, with all these great skins around... Like mail notifiers and such. Anybody?

I would go one step further and ask if anyone knows of any good freeware apps to make sound effects? I would much rather make them than dredge databases endlessly to find them, and then worry if I am using sounds that were ripped from unauthorized sources.

We have freeware apps to make images, icons, etc., sounds should be a reasonable expectation, too, I think.

Thanks Yrag. But I fully agree with Baker Street. Not enough quality our there. How about a section for sounds at wincustomize?

Argh, no. not my intention at all. A sound section would be flooded with the kind of material at other sites, most of which is ripped out of multimedia with no regard to ownership.

If we could, though, find some software that allows us to make our own sounds, we could share our techniques for making clicks, buzzes, etc. Not to be argumentative, but I really, really don't like the idea of a sound section.

Baker Street: Well, of course I wouldn't like that either. But sounds can be edited. Are you talking about a new format?

My point is that it's impossible to check for ownership for sounds in the first place. What's a "rip" where sound is concerned? Where' the limit?

Most sounds on public upload sites are extracted resources or recorded sounds from after-market media, and I would rather not have them. The legality isn't really an issue. I guess my philosophy is, if I didn't make it, someone else did. If I can't say who, then I have no idea if they mind if I use it or not.

Thing is, if you go to these .wav sites, good utility sounds are pretty rare. A lot of the content there will always be fuzzy curse words, animal noises, guns, tire screeches, bad quality movie sounds, cartoon sound effects, and even more bad quality movie sounds and quotes. Lots of them.

The reason goes back to the definition of 'utility sounds'. Horror of horrors, I have seen a desktop machine whose sound theme was *completely* made up of bad quality clips from "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective". From Windows startup to mouse overs, to Windows exit. Everything. I still haven't recovered. For that reason, I don't think you could have a sound section for skinning. You couldn't get it through to some people that "LLLLOOOOSER" isn't a mouseover sound.

As I said, though, I would really dig a pointer to software that would let me make clicks, buzzes, etc. I'll google around for a while later when I have more than a minute to spend.

Not a clue if this is good or not, but I found this with a Google search:

Looks cool. I am gonna come back to it later, else I will burn my Rice Pilaf and woe to the soul which endangers my Rice Pilaf!!! I'll dig into it later; my buttons demand pimp sizzounds.

I agree that most sounds you find out there are bad replicas. That's why I started this in the first place. However, I think making a sound section here could stimulate people into creativity. And I have confidence that rhe admin's of wincustomize could filter out the worst, like, say the wallpaper section.

heh, I don't know the exact words the admins would use when they were told they had to moderate a sounds section, but I am pretty sure I know what the overall vibe would be. Wallpapers are hairy enough.

See your point....
